What is SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP Certification

The SHRM Certified Professional (SHRM-CP) and SHRM Senior Certified Professional (SHRM-SCP) are the most comprehensive competency-based certifications for HR professionals. What is a SHRM Specialty Credential?

A SHRM Specialty Credential is a recognition of competency-based professional development accomplished in a focused field of practice. Those completing a SHRM Specialty Credential have demonstrated specialized knowledge in a complex and continually-evolving topic area (e.g.,California Employment Law or Talent Acquisition).  Once earned, practitioners will receive a certificate of accomplishment along with a digital badge verifying their specialty.  In addition, SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP credential-holders who complete a SHRM Specialty Credential will have the designated set of professional development credits (PDCs) allotted to the specialty credential automatically uploaded to their SHRM Certification Portal. A SHRM Specialty Credential will remain valid for three years from the date of completion.  A SHRM Specialty Credential cannot be recertified and can only be re-issued following completion of the updated specialty credential learning program.

What is the difference between SHRM-CP/SHRM-SCP Certification and a SHRM Specialty Credential?

SHRM-CP/SHRM-SCP certifications are the pinnacle achievement and global standard in certification for the HR profession. The SHRM Body of Competency and Knowledge (SHRM BoCK) is the foundation for these certifications. The SHRM BoCK—the product of rigorous research involving thousands of HR professionals organizes eight behavioral competencies into three clusters: Leadership (Leadership & Navigation, Ethical Practice), Interpersonal (Relationship Management, Communication, Global & Cultural Effectiveness), and Business (Business Acumen, Consultation, Critical Evaluation). Additionally, there are 15 HR knowledge areas that are critical to the success of any HR professional.  

By incorporating key HR competencies and knowledge into the SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP exams, SHRM's certifications demonstrate to the global business community that the credential-holder has strong capabilities in both aspects of HR practice—competency and knowledge—that are required for effective job performance. Your SHRM certification can be recertified every three years through 60 hours of qualified professional development activities.

A SHRM Specialty Credential educates individuals on specific learning objectives.  This is done by participating in a series of learning events and passing an assessment to demonstrate comprehension of program learning objectives.  You cannot recertify a specialty credential.  After three years, you must complete the learning events and pass the assessment to earn a new credential.

How to earn the SHRM California Employment Law Micro-Credential

1.  Purchase the SHRM California Employment Law Micro-Credential package, which includes:

  • Enrollment in the California HR: Applying CA Law to Employment Practices Seminar--available in-person and virtually!

  • Four comprehensive SHRM eLearning courses on California-specific topics:

    • California Wage and Hour Laws

    • California Leaves of Absence

    • California Privacy, Security, Health and Safety

    • California Benefits

  • Pass a 51-question online California knowledge assessment.

2. After passing the assessment, add your Micro-Credential to your resume, e-mail signatures and social media profiles, proving your California expertise to your employer and your network.

3. You do not need to be SHRM-certified to earn the SHRM California Employment Law Micro-Credential; however, you will receive 25 PDCs toward your SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP recertification upon completion of the Micro-Credential package.
