Commercial Diver




Job Summary:

The Commercial Diver will use scuba gear to work below the water to inspect, install, remove, or repair equipment and structures.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • None.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Performs underwater search and rescue, salvage, recovery, or cleanup operations.
  • Inspects and maintains diving equipment, such as helmets, masks, air tanks, harnesses, and gauges.
  • Ensures appropriate safety measures are taken; monitors dive lengths and depths.
  • Uses underwater cameras and other equipment to inspect and record condition of docks, ships, buoy systems, and underwater pipelines and cables.
  • Takes photographs and gathers test samples to evaluate condition of vessels or structures; recovers salvageable ships, parts, or cargo.
  • Installs footings and pilings for piers or bridges and repairs ships, bridges, or other structures below the waterline.
  • Recovers sunken objects using cranes or winches.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Mastery in use of diving equipment such as scuba gear, air tanks, helmets, gauges, diving suits, and masks.
  • Proficient in use of use hand tools, power tools, and welding equipment.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to use still and video cameras.

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Successful completion of an accredited commercial diver course required.
  • Two years of related experience highly preferred.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to dive into waters at all depths, temperatures, and visibility conditions.
  • Must be able to remain underwater for prolonged periods of time.
  • Must be able to lift 25 pounds at a time.
