California law now requires employers to post a notice outlining employees’ rights and protections under the state’s whistleblower laws. Assembly Bill 2299 mandates the labor commissioner to provide a model notice, which has recently been published. Employers may use the model or create their own version, provided it meets specific requirements, including a 14-point font and inclusion of the whistleblower hotline number, with compliance required by January 1, 2025.
California employers should be mindful of their compliance obligations related to protecting employees from wildfire smoke, as well as potential leave and pay requirements to support employees during wildfires.
Several new California employment laws become effective on January 1, 2025.
California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed Senate Bill 988, the Freelance Worker Protection Act (FWPA), into law on Sept. 28, 2024. The act imposes requirements on individuals and companies that hire freelance workers for specified “professional services.”
