Learn how to submit your essay for the SHRM Books Read-for-Recertification Credit program


Navigating the SHRM eLearning portal to upload your book essay for the SHRM Books Read-for-Recertification Credit program is easy. Just follow these steps and contact us with any questions or to report a technical problem.

Use these helpful tips to write your essay.

Part one: Register for the Activity

Step 1. Register for the book essay activity to submit your completed essay for review:

a. Find the book title and click the image to open the essay activity registration page

b. Add the activity to your SHRMStore cart 

c. Complete the free, no-cost checkout process. 

All book essay activities are totally free-of-charge. The registration process requires that you add the activity to your cart and check out but the price is zero and you will NOT be charged for the registration.

Important! Your essay cannot earn SHRM Certification PDCs unless you have registered for the book's eLearning essay activity.

Step 2. Look for a SHRM email message (please check your spam filter) confirming your registration. The confirmation message signals that your registration will appear in the SHRM LMS; the process is quick but please allow up to 20 minutes for the LMS to update then proceed to the next section of this guide.


Step A. Use your username and password to log in to

Step B. Upon successful login you will be redirected to your dashboard. Click on the MY LEARNING widget to view a list of the activities for which you are registered. 


Step C. Locate the book for which you wish to submit an essay and click on the title to view details about the activity.


Step D. Review the details then click START to open the book essay submission form in a pop-up window. Be sure to let your browser open pop-up windows before you start the activity.


Step E. A new browser window will open with the essay submission form. Provide the required information, add your essay, review the terms, then click Submit Form to send your essay to SHRM Books for review.


Step F. Close the form window and return to the activity overview page. The activity status will be IN PROGRESS until SHRM Books has reviewed and accepted your essay. You can end your session or click Timeline to view other activities for which you are registered.


Step G. Look for an email notification you that your essay has been accepted or the program has questions about your submission.

Step H. Once SHRM Books accepts your essay, the activity and associated credits will appear in your Training Transcript. Click on the Self menu then select Quick Links >> Training Transcript. To view and print/save your Certificate of Completion, click the certificate icon on the left side of the activity title. 




After SHRM Books accepts your essay, the eLearning system reports your activity to SHRM Certification to update your PDC history. 

If you need to report your activity immediately, here are the steps:

a. Return to your Training Transcript in the SHRM eLearning portal

b. Find the related essay activity 

c. Open the Certificate of Completion by clicking the certificate icon on the left

d. Note the activity ID code on the certificate under the Date Completed section. The code is a series of two numbers followed by a dash and mix of five letters and numbers (ex: 23-ABC12).

e. Log into the SHRM Certification portal and use the activity ID code to report your PDCs.
