Job Summary:
The Workers Compensation Claims Examiner will assess and approve claims for workers compensation benefits.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- May assign minor claims to entry-level or trainee examiners.
- May assist with performance evaluations that are timely and constructive.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Reviews workers compensation claim forms.
- Evaluates injury reports to assess compensation and to determine the anticipated cost of each claim.
- Approves medical treatment, hospitalization, and surgery.
- Calculates permanent disability ratings.
- Coordinates payment of medical bills, disability compensation, and death benefits.
- Maintains records, files, and databases of claims; prepares summary reports of collected data.
- Provides client companies and employees with information and training regarding workers compensation benefits.
- Explains proper management of workers compensation claims to client employers.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Extensive knowledge and understanding of applicable workers compensation laws, procedures, and regulations.
- Extensive knowledge of medical and technical terminology used in workers compensation cases.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to deliver presentations to explain rules and policies.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- At least two years related experience with workers compensation claims required.
- Completion of a certificate course in workers compensation administration or similar training required.
- SHRM-CP preferred.
Physical Requirements:
- Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
- Ability to travel to various worksites to provide training.
