Job Summary:
The Superintendent of Schools will act as the chief executive officer of a public school system, implementing the school boards vision by creating policies, procedures, and programs that fulfill applicable federal, state, and local requirements while providing the best possible education for each student.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- Oversees school principals and district staff.
- Conducts performance evaluations that are timely and constructive.
Duties/ Responsibilities:
- Executes the vision of the school board by drafting, adopting, and implementing policies, procedures, and programs that fulfill all federal, state, and local requirements
- Oversees long-range planning for the school district; addresses community needs for additional schools and other construction and renovation projects.
- Collaborates with school board members to set goals and to develop a unified mission for the school system; presents this mission to faculty, staff, and community stakeholders.
- Leads educational staff in developing curriculum; leads support staff in executing other aspects of school operations.
- Manages the fiscal operations of the school system.
- Proposes and presents annual school budgets including school population projections and staffing expectations for the following year to the school board.
- Acts as a liaison between schools and school board and lobbies for additional resources when necessary.
- Assesses inclement weather and other emergency situations and determines whether to close schools or operate on an abbreviated or normal schedule.
- Conducts research and analysis to support decisions regarding educational programs, spending, staffing, and facilities.
- Acts as the main representative of and spokesperson for the school system. Keeps the public informed on the operation and status of the educational system.
- Maintains knowledge of laws and regulations related to education.
- Performs other related duties as required.
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Outstanding managerial and leadership skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills with students, staff, parents and government officials.
- Ability to negotiate with people who have different or opposing viewpoints.
- Thorough understanding of pedagogy and various implementation options.
- Thorough understanding of laws and regulations related to education.
- Thorough understanding of financial administration.
Education and Experience:
- Masters Degree in Education required, Doctorate preferred.
- At least ten years of experience in school administration required.
Physical Requirements:
- Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
