Job Summary:
The Juvenile Probation Officer will oversee youth who are on probation or parole, ensuring adolescents and their families comply with court terms and orders.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- None.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Meets with the juvenile and family to assess the situation and understand relevant aspects of the family and social history.
- Regularly visits juveniles home to ensure compliance with terms and orders set by court.
- Counsels juveniles, offering guidance on changing or eliminating behavioral issues.
- Based on juveniles compliance and progress, provides presiding judges with recommendations for alternate sentencing or treatment.
- Ensures educational matters, medical issues, and court mandates are properly addressed.
- Provides regular, detailed, and accurate reports to the court.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Excellent organizational and critical-thinking skills.
- Ability to stay calm in difficult and emotional situations and to counsel troubled youth and their families.
- Understanding of laws and regulations pertaining to the custody, welfare, protection, and detention of juvenile offenders.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite or related software.
Education and Experience:
- Bachelors degree in Criminal Justice, Social Work, Behavioral Sciences, or related field required; Masters degree preferred.
- Experience working with troubled adolescents preferred.
- Valid drivers license.
Physical Requirements:
- Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
