In the post-election era, organizations face the challenge of supporting employees’ emotional health while maintaining productivity. Renee Schmidt, Ph.D., R.Psych, a registered psychologist, emphasizes recognizing the actual physical and psychological impacts of elections on individuals, noting that “these effects should neither be assumed nor dismissed.”
Schmidt advises that proactive support benefits organizations. “Providing resources such as Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs), mindfulness training, and stress management tools can offer essential support,” adding that open communication and adjusted workloads may also reduce employee stress.
She explains that creating a culture of political neutrality fosters respect and inclusivity, allowing employees to express emotions safely without affecting their performance or well-being. “Psychological safety is critical,” Schmidt adds, pointing out that election tensions don’t simply vanish but can persist in the workplace for some time.
