SHRM Urges Members to Express Support for WIOA Reauthorization

SHRM is encouraging its members to contact their U.S. senators to support the reauthorization of the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA).

WIOA is the foundation of workforce development investment at the federal level, helping job seekers access employment, education, training, and support services, according to SHRM.

The House of Representatives passed H.R. 6655, A Stronger Workforce for America Act, on April 9. The Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee noted in a hearing June 12 that it expects to vote on the legislation this summer. If a vote does not take place by Congress’ August recess, hopes for reauthorization this year drastically diminish.

WIOA reauthorization is a critical concern for HR professionals and employers alike, SHRM said. Should H.R. 6655 be enacted, WIOA reauthorization would fund the nation’s workforce development system through 2030, helping close the national skills gap, providing more accountability in the system, and helping U.S. workers obtain high-quality, well-paying jobs.

SHRM asks that members take action today by visiting SHRM’s Advocacy Action Center or by texting WIOA to 52886 and completing the form.
