Navigating political dialogue in the workplace can be challenging, but SHRM’s Political Conversations Playbook offers guidance on how to accomplish civil discourse.
To bring about understanding among employees on political conversations at work, employers need to recognize the full impact of politics at work. Political discussions at work are common; the playbook noted that 83% of people said they’ve discussed politics at work.
Positive outcomes of these conversations might include enhanced inclusivity and increased engagement, but unintended outcomes could include increased tension and stress, as well as exclusion and alienation for those with minority or opposing views.
Companies that navigate political conversations well can build a reputation for being inclusive and open-minded, enhancing their brand as a progressive and socially responsible organization, the playbook explained.
On the other hand, poorly handled political discussions can lead to negative publicity. Additionally, if political conversations are perceived as being unfairly managed or biased, there might be accusations of favoritism or discrimination.
Furthermore, workers who rate their workplace high on both civility and psychological safety during political conversations are more likely than workers who do not rate their workplaces favorably to say their organization supports innovative actions.
But unintended outcomes when political discussions become contentious can include distraction from core business goals, leading to decreased productivity and focus as well as increased turnover.
Steps to Resolve Conflict
The Political Conversations Playbook includes the following recommendations to resolve conflict:
- Schedule a meeting to address the problem in person, preferably at a neutral place.
- Set the ground rules, requesting that all parties treat each other with respect and empathy.
- Ask each participant to describe the conflict and their desired outcomes.
- Ask participants to restate what others have said to ensure everyone is listening and understanding what is being said.
- Summarize the conflict based on what you have heard and obtain agreement from participants.
- Brainstorm solutions by discussing all options positively.
Encourage Civil Conversations
Recommendations from the playbook to encourage civil conversations at work include:
- Educate yourself.
- Establish a shared understanding of civility.
- Identify team norms for mutual respect.
- Promote a culture of civility.
- Become a catalyst for civility.
“Remember, fostering civility is an ongoing process,” the playbook stated, “and doing so will further cement civility as a norm and expectation in your workplace culture.”
