Job Summary:
The Food Processing Technician will assist food scientists with safety and quality tests of food products and with research of methods to improve the food industry.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- None.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Conducts tests under the supervision of a food scientist to identify factors in a food item such as coloring, nutrients, or moisture levels.
- Assists food scientists with food product safety and quality testing.
- Assists food scientists with research of improvements to food industry methods.
- Ensures food products and processes are compliant with Food and Drug Administration rules and regulations.
- Researches and develops ways to grow agricultural products more efficiently.
- Researches and develops improved methods for packaging.
- Researches and develops improvements to food processing methods to better preserve nutrients.
- Tests for bacteria or extraneous material in chemical and biological samples.
- Records and analyzes test results and creates presentations of information.
- Ensures laboratory is properly stocked.
- Ensures equipment is ready and in proper working order.
- Ensures raw materials and finished goods are handled, processed, and stored properly.
- Ensures personal hygiene rules are followed by food process workers.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite or related software.
- Thorough understanding of research process and safety testing.
- Thorough understanding of food science processes and procedures.
- Excellent analytical skills.
- Ability to compose technical reports.
Education and Experience:
- Associates degree in Food Science or related area required; Bachelors degree preferred.
Physical Requirements:
- Sufficient visual acuity to observe appearance of products and cleanliness of production area and equipment.
- Sufficient manual dexterity to operate equipment and input test results.
- Ability to move as needed to inspect production and storage areas.
- Good sense of taste and smell for product sampling.
- Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
