ALEXANDRIA, Va. – Johnny C. Taylor, Jr., President & CEO of SHRM, issued the following statement in response to the current situation at America's East and Gulf Coast ports:
"At SHRM, we recognize the immense challenges of creating an environment where both employers and employees can thrive simultaneously—and we believe it's achievable. Disputes and strikes at our nation's ports significantly impact the economy, American families, and businesses alike. We strongly advocate for people’s ability to work. Every individual should have the opportunity to contribute meaningfully, as the livelihood of workers and the vitality of our economy depend on it.
The current situation at America's East and Gulf Coast ports highlights the urgent need for a sustainable labor solution. We remain optimistic that all involved parties can reach an agreement that ensures mutual success. For companies to prosper and for workers to have secure futures, it is essential to find solutions that acknowledge the critical role these jobs play in our economy, particularly in the supply chain that keeps America moving.
Looking ahead, one thing is clear: automation and generative AI are here to stay. Avoiding or banning these technologies is not a sustainable solution. With rapid technological advancements, there are significant growth opportunities if approached proactively. Our objective should be to bridge the workforce to new roles and opportunities, ensuring employees are equipped with the skills needed to thrive alongside advances in technology.
There are countless jobs requiring a skilled workforce, and it is our collective responsibility to prepare people for the future. Automation will impact every generation and industry, making it imperative for CEOs, CHROs, and policymakers to guide organizations toward innovation and sustainability.
SHRM is committed to fostering an environment where both employees and businesses can grow, adapt, and succeed in this evolving landscape. We call on all leaders to work collaboratively, leveraging technology and human capital to build a resilient and prosperous future."
