Our vision is to be a preeminent and globally recognized authority whose leadership, perspective, resources and expertise are sought and utilized to address the most pressing, current and emerging human resource management issues.

Our mission is to be a globally recognized HR professional society that exists to develop and serve the HR professional, and advance and lead the HR profession. SHRM provides education, thought leadership, certification, community and advocacy to enhance the practice of human resource management and the effectiveness of HR professionals in the organizations and communities they serve.

Originally founded as the American Society for Personnel Administration (ASPA) by a small but visionary group of personnel administrators, SHRM has grown into the world's largest HR membership organization. SHRM has a dedicated staff of over 350 and is headquartered in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area.

Board of Directors

The Board of Directors provides leadership for SHRM by:

  • Upholding SHRM's vision, pupose and values;
  • Setting the broad policies, direction and priorities of the organization;
  • Ensuring that SHRM has highly effective leadership;
  • Providing fiduciary oversight; and
  • Maintaining the integrity of SHRM services and products developed for the benefit of SHRM members.

The Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology (SIOP) and the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), together with the SIOP and SHRM Foundations, are co-sponsoring the first international award to honor organizations that have outstanding evidence-based HR management practices. 

The competition will select winners based on HR practices and initiatives that have been measured and determined successful through evidence-based, data-driven analysis. One or more winning organization will be recognized publicly each year. Any for-profit, not-for-profit, or government organization located anywhere in the world may apply for this award. Name of Award The Excel Awards-Professional Chapters and State Councils 
Description 






The recognition component of the SHRM Affiliate Program for Excellence (SHAPE) is the Excel Awards.  Awards may be earned at four levels:  Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum.  Each level builds on a prescribed set of requirements and accomplishment. Chapters and state councils must submit the required SHAPE Year-End Report no later than the due date for award consideration.  Winners of the award will be notified in March and will receive award podium banners and recognition in SHRM publications and at conferences.

The SHRM Pinnacle Award Program is designed to honor SHRM affiliates for high-level development and contribution that enhance the development of effective human resource management. All SHRM chapters and state councils are eligible to submit applications. Pinnacle Awards of $1,000 are awarded to State Councils as well as Small, Medium/Large, Mega/SuperMega Chapters in 3 categories: Advancing The Profession, Serving the Profession, and Enhancing the SHRM Community. In addition to the awards and monetary grants, this impressive program provides increased prestige among your peers and enhanced recognition in the human resource industry.

DescriptionSHRM Foundation Dissertation Grants are given to four promising researchers in the field of human resource management at the dissertation stage of their doctoral education. This annual competition is funded by the SHRM Foundation, in partnership with the HR Division of the Academy of Management and is intended to support the dissertation research of doctoral candidates. The winners of these dissertation grants each receive a plaque, $5,000 from the SHRM Foundation, and are honored at the Academy of Management's annual meeting.
