Job Summary:

The Criminal Investigator will perform a variety of investigative duties to help determine whether sufficient evidence exists to recommend criminal prosecution of a suspect.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

• None.

Duties/Responsibilities:

• Investigates various violations of federal or state statutes including violent crimes, financial crimes, organized and conspiratorial activity, copyright infringement, egregious civil rights violations, and other suspected crimes.
• Gathers and verifies evidence through interviews and observation of suspects and witnesses or by reviewing and analyzing records and logs.
• Uses proper methods to search for, collect, and maintain various types of evidence including fingerprints or DNA.
• Identifies scope, timing, and direction of investigations and justifies changes in that criteria based on findings.
• Compiles and reports detailed investigation findings.
• Obtains and implements search and arrest warrants.
• Provides court testimony regarding observations and determinations of criminal activity.
• Gathers and records physical information about arrested suspects including fingerprints, weight and height measurements, and photographs.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Required Skills/Abilities:

• Excellent understanding of laws, judicial procedures, regulations, rules, and guidelines related to crime and evidence.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite or related software.
• Excellent critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

• Possesses keen social awareness.
• Organized and detail-oriented.

Education and Experience:

• Associates degree in a related field required; Bachelors degree preferred.

Physical Requirements:

• Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
• Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
