HR executives are one of the fastest-growing C-suite roles, according to a new LinkedIn analysis of executives at S&P 500 companies and unicorn startups.
Based on LinkedIn data, the fastest-growing C-level executive role is chief data officer, followed by chief legal officer and chief human resources officer. Chief people officer came in ninth on the list of the 10 fastest-growing C-suite jobs. The list reflects the importance of AI, data, and people to businesses.

Pathways to the Top Are Changing
The LinkedIn report found that the industry path to the C-suite is diversifying. In 2018, 89% of executives only worked in one industry before attaining a chief leadership role, compared with 66% in 2023. Similarly, the percentage of top executives who previously only worked in one job function fell from 87% in 2018 to 59% in 2023, indicating that diverse employment history is becoming more important for leadership roles.
