Job Summary:
To learn the construction ironworker trade, under the guidance of a job trainer or experienced journeyman, by performing a number of work assignments, such as erecting, repairing and renovating new and existing buildings, dams, docks, aqueducts, tunnels and other construction projects.

Duties/Responsibilities:

For first eight weeks of apprenticeship, participates in formal training during the joint apprenticeship committee's vestibule training classes.

Under the guidance of a job instructor, works as an ironworker helper to learn basics of the trade.

Assumes basic apprentice job assignments, such as building and installing metal stairways, catwalks, floor gratings, and other metal and ornamental fixtures.

Unloads, moves and erects derricks, cranes, jacks and cribbing on construction or repair projects.

Uses architectural prints and oral and written instructions to fabricate and erect components of a building.

Burns, welds, bolts and bends various metals using hand and machine tools associated with the trade.
Required Skills/Abilities:

Will be required to take a steel walking test and an aptitude test administered by the state job service.

Must be at least 18 years of age.
Education and Experience:
-
Must have successfully completed at least 10th grade or possess an armed forces or department of education high school equivalency certificate.
Physical Requirements:

Frequently works at great heights.

Requires long periods of standing, bending and climbing.

Must be able to lift 75 or more pounds at times, with or without assistance.
