The Floor Layer will measure, cut, and install various types of flooring and subflooring according to directions.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- None.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Gathers and delivers supplies to construction or remodeling site; confirms correct quantity, quality, and type of flooring based on specifications.
- Removes furniture, radiators, existing flooring, molding, or any other obstacles as needed.
- Inspects, levels, and readies surfaces for flooring.
- Makes any necessary repairs before installing floors.
- Installs plywood or Masonite over existing floor or covers floor in waterproof compound and fills cracks as needed.
- Safely and correctly uses tools such as levels, plumb lines, adhesives, knives, sanders, and cutting or carpentry tools to create smooth and professional surfaces; chooses the correct tool for the specified type of flooring.
- Measures rooms precisely and accurately cuts materials to specifications.
- Coordinates installation with other simultaneous projects, ensuring adequate drying and curing time.
- Installs flooring and trims excess materials.
- Prepares flooring for finishes and applies appropriate finishing material.
- Applies decorative coverings and shock-absorbing or sound-deadening materials as directed.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Excellent eye for detail.
- Ability to understand and correctly calculate math and measurements.
- Ability to read diagrams and blue prints.
Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent or demonstrated ability to read and understand written directions required; vocational school or community college training preferred.
- At least six months of experience under a qualified floor layer required.
Physical Requirements:
- Prolonged periods bending, stretching, lifting, and working on knees.
- Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds at a time and have sufficient strength to install floors.
- Must be able to work at night or on weekends as needed to complete job and coordinate with other trades.
- Must have sufficient visual acuity to inspect fittings and straightness of flooring.
