Workers See State Minimum Wage Increases
Jan. 1 marked the effective date for scores of new state and local laws, including laws increasing the minimum wage. More than 9.2 million workers in 21 states saw their wages increase, and 48 cities and counties went further by increasing their minimum wages. An additional 28 jurisdictions will also increase their minimum wages later this year. The Economic Policy Institute predicts that by 2027, nearly half of U.S. workers will live in states with a minimum wage of at least $15 per hour. The federal minimum wage, last updated in 2009, remains $7.25 per hour.
