Veteran Hiring

The PsychArmor Institute has made its library of employer training courses available to all SHRM members as part of a SHRM Foundation initiative to encourage and expand veteran hiring. PsychArmor’s School for Employers Who Invest in Military Talent provides information on different aspects of military culture to assist HR professionals in ensuring service members are successfully hired, on-boarded and retained. The complimentary courses will be available to all SHRM members beginning on March 27, 2018.

PsychArmor’s online courses are designed to help organizations with everything from best practices for veteran recruitment and retention, to establishing a military cultural competency model, to effective veteran engagement. Select courses will qualify for SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP recertification credits.

The SHRM Foundation is working to improve veteran employee integration and engagement into the workforce by identifying existing challenges and leading solutions in veteran employment. Visit for information on our Integrating & Engaging Veterans in the Workforce initiative.

We've updated our resources page to provide step-by-step advice to SHRM state council and chapter volunteer leaders to support their work to educate their communities about the SHRM Foundation.

You'll find tools and ideas for fundraising, templates to communicate the SHRM Foundation's mission, and resources to consider when planning a volunteer event. Use our checklists to align your efforts with the goals and priorities of your state council or chapter.

Each year, the SHRM Foundation recognizes the Top 10 Fundraising SHRM State Councils and Top 25 Fundraising SHRM Chapters that raise the highest total yearly contributions in support of the SHRM Foundation’s mission.

In 2017, the SHRM Foundation’s annual campaign raised more than $1 million for the fifth year in a row, with more than $650,000 raised by SHRM state councils and chapters. As a 501(c)(3) charity, the work of the SHRM Foundation is only possible thanks to the generous support received from individuals, organizations—such as state councils and chapters—and corporations.

To learn more about the top fundraisers or the state council and chapter Foundation Champion awards, visit our recognition webpage.

The SHRM Foundation has created a handy checklist for HR professionals and students who are applying for any scholarship, whether its a SHRM certification, one of the foundation’s academic scholarships or a graduate student award.

Most scholarship applications involve three parts: a resume, an essay and recommendation letters. We offer advice on tackling all three components and remind applicants of some of the most common pitfalls, including forgetting to proofread!

For more information about scholarship and award deadlines, make sure to visit the SHRM Foundation deadlines page.

We know that HR professionals are on the front line of hiring and retention. And we know that empowered HR professionals are the key to building inclusive organizations, especially for military veterans.

That's why the SHRM Foundation is focused on providing solutions and scholarships to help HR professionals drive veteran hiring. In 2017, we launched our Integrating & Engaging Veterans in the Workforce initiative to make a measurable impact on the hiring and retention of military veterans. In 2018, the SHRM Foundation will award more than 20 scholarships to veterans and those dedicated to hiring service members.

In 2017, we awarded U.S. Army veteran Cecilia (Cici) Clark with a scholarship to attend her first SHRM Annual Conference & Exposition. At the conference and during the SHRM Foundation's annual luncheon, Cici spoke about her experiences in the military, the person who helped her become a leader and how HR professionals can make an impact on the hiring and retention of veterans.
