SHRM Foundation Research Grants


Conditions of Funding

Researchers whose proposals are accepted for funding are required to:

  • Provide the SHRM Foundation with a signed Research Agreement.

  • Provide the SHRM Foundation with a Social Security number (for U.S. citizens) or equivalent tax identification number (for non-U.S. citizens) in order to receive grant payments.

  • If using human subjects, provide either (1) approval from an institutional review board (IRB) or (2) an exemption from IRB review by an institutional review board (not by the principal investigator). For researchers outside the U.S., approval or exemption from an equivalent body is required.

  • Supply brief project updates prior to SHRM Foundation Board meetings three times each year.

  • Submit an electronic copy of the final report to the SHRM Foundation. The report should be 30-50 pages in length and should explain the study's methodology, results and implications for HR practice. An article submitted to, or published by, a major academic journal may substitute for this report.

  • Develop from the research data a 1000-word executive summary targeted to the HR practitioner audience and focusing on implications for practice.

  • Create a one-paragraph media summary. A concise synopsis of the 1-2 most newsworthy findings from your study, for use in news articles and press releases.

  • Where possible, acknowledge SHRM Foundation funding in all articles published and papers presented from the results of the study.

  • Complete the project within two years. A one-time extension of up to one additional year may be granted in some cases.
Twenty percent (20%) of the total awarded grant will be withheld until all of the above conditions of funding are met.
