ALEXANDRIA, Va. — The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) has appointed longtime executive Michael P. Aitken as senior vice president for its growing membership.

In his new role, he will oversee the association’s service to its more than 300,000 members and relationships with more than 575 affiliated chapters.

With more than 25 years of experience working on workplace and workforce issues, Aitken is a leading authority on issues important to the human resource profession.  He joined SHRM in 2003 and most recently was vice president of government affairs.

In overseeing SHRM’s advocacy work on the federal and state level, he has traveled to SHRM chapters and state councils across the United States to educate business and HR leaders on the impact of public policy on the workplace.

“Membership is the critical component of SHRM’s mission. It requires a leader with considerable talent, extensive networks and a strong understanding of the HR profession. We have found that in Mike Aitken,” said SHRM President and Chief Executive Officer Johnny C. Taylor, Jr., SHRM-SCP. “I am thrilled to have Mike in this key role.”

As SHRM’s lead lobbyist, Aitken has amplified HR’s voice through advocacy, hosted the annual Employment Law & Legislative Conference and led Capitol Hill activities on workplace issues. He is a frequent speaker on the effect of legislation and regulation on the workplace. Under his leadership, SHRM developed the Workflex in the 21st Century Act, which was introduced in November 2017 in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Before joining SHRM, Aitken was associate director for governmental and external relations at the College and University Professional Association for Human Resources for 14 years. Earlier, he worked on state public policy issues at Bonner & Associates, a public affairs firm in Washington, D.C.

In 2015 and 2016, he served as an employer representative on the U.S. delegation to the International Labour Conference.

Aitken currently serves as a board member for OpenWork and is a member of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Labor Relations Committee.

He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of San Diego.

His appointment is effective today, Monday, Nov. 5.
