Alexandria, Va. — The public comment period for the new human resources
standard on performance management is open now to Oct. 21.
The goal of the performance management standard, drafted by a taskforce of HR professionals and experts, is to create a consensus on the minimum characteristics of an effective performance management system. In addition, the standard will focus on the role of goal setting, performance reviews and performance improvement plans in an effective performance management system.
“We have been lucky to have an experienced team working on this project,” said Susan Harmansky, SPHR, leader of the Performance Management Standards Taskforce. “Their diverse backgrounds have resulted in a standard for effective performance management that we hope will have application for organizations across industries and of all sizes. We look forward to hearing from our HR colleagues and others with ideas to further strengthen the standard.”
In February 2009, the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) designated the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) as the exclusive U.S. developer of human resources standards. SHRM led a taskforce to develop a consensus standard for performance management later that year. SHRM also leads taskforces devoted to developing standards for diversity and inclusion, measures and metrics, and staffing and workforce planning.
All SHRM standards, including the performance management standards, are developed with the involvement of those who are affected by the standard, such as HR practitioners, academics, consultants and line managers from public and private firms across the country.
SHRM's consensus standards development process is accredited by ANSI, a private, non-profit organization that administers and coordinates the U.S. voluntary standardization and conformity assessment systems.
Individuals and organizations can view or submit comments on the proposed draft standard by visiting the
