Your Professional Development

To help you navigate your way toward a more rewarding HR career, SHRM has developed several tools to guide your HR professional development. After you explore the SHRM Competency Model, start using these tools to help you assess your proficiency, identify development activities and plan how you'll build your proficiency so you can continuously develop and advance your HR career. 

Competency Self-Assessment

The Competency Self-Assessment (CSA) helps you identify your HR knowledge and behavioral competency strengths and development needs. Click "Get Started" below to access the CSA and learn more about the tool.

Once you've taken the assessment, click the "Find Development Activities" button at the bottom of your report for tailored activity recommendations to build your proficiencies.

If you are a SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP certified member, you will receive one professional development credit (PDC) per year for each calendar year you complete the CSA


Development Activities

Use the Development Activity Wizard (DAW) to get professional development recommendations based on your learning preferences or CSA results. Whether it’s a seminar, a webcast, a book or an article, activities provided in the DAW are based on SHRM research with HR professionals worldwide, identifying the most effective programs and resources for developing and strengthening your HR knowledge and competencies.

You can also browse the full Development Activity Database to view the complete list of all available SHRM, preferred provider, and education partner activities and to decide for yourself.

Competency Development Plan

Once you’ve taken the CSA, keep your professional development moving with a Competency Development Plan (CDP). The CDP establishes a structure for you to target, prioritize and complete the identified activities; document additional needed support; and set your metrics of success. You’ll be on your way!


SHRM provides two options for you to begin creating your own CDP:

Option 1. Begin creating your own plan from scratch. Click the "Download SHRM CDP" button to access the customizable CDP.

Option 2. Let SHRM get you started with your plan. Use the DAW to find activity recommendations and click the "Create a Development Plan" button to generate a CDP that includes those recommendations.
