SHRM Webcast: Crafting an Effective Social Media Policy

Public or Private:

Crafting an Effective Social Media Policy

July 2012 (available through July 3, 2013)

Recertification Credit: 1.5*
Presenter: Elizabeth Bille, Esq., Society for Human Resource Management

Many organizations struggle with how to address their employees’ use of social media. From reports of hiring managers asking job applicants for social media account passwords, to employees complaining about the company on a personal Facebook page, or departing employees taking company Twitter accounts with them, organizations continue to grapple with how to address behavior in this medium. In many respects, the HR and legal rules of engagement are not new; yet the stakes seem higher due to the instantaneous and very public nature of social media platforms. A key to navigating this area is to have robust policies in place to guide and protect your organization.

In this webcast, the presenter will provide attendees with several key elements and strategies to consider when developing social media policies. Whether an organization’s philosophy is to empower all employees to use social media for work, or to restrict employee usage, this webinar will provide participants with several types of policy provisions that will help protect an organization from legal exposure, safeguard organizational assets, facilitate consistent messaging, and complement existing workplace policies.
