    Over the past couple of decades, the workplace has changed dramatically. The changes in workers' lives at home have been just as significant. Employers have learned that, to motivate their best workers, reduce turnover and even keep health care costs under control, they must adopt policies and implement programs that reflect the lifestyles of today's workers. In this webcast, Ellen Galinsky and Lois Backon of the Families and Work Institute will explore the important role workplace flexibility can play in your total rewards strategy. They'll share data on how workplace flexibility have improved organizations' bottom line. And, Galinsky and Backon will review best practice examples from employers of all sizes, showing how creative workplace changes are being implemented.

    About the speakers: Ellen Galinsky is president and co-founder of Families and Work Institute (FWI). Ms. Galinsky helped establish the field of work and family life while at Bank Street College of Education, where she was on the faculty for 25 years. Her more than 45 books and reports include the highly acclaimed Mind in the Making: The Seven Essential Life Skills Every Child Needs, Ask The Children and the now classic The Six Stages of Parenthood. She has published over 125 articles in academic journals, books and magazines. At the Institute, Ms. Galinsky co-directs the National Study of the Changing Workforce, the most comprehensive nationally representative study of the U.S. workforce. She also co-directs When Work Works, a project on workplace flexibility and effectiveness first funded by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation that has produced a series of research papers, as well as the prestigious Sloan Awards. In 2011, the Society for Human Resource Management and the Families and Work Institute formed a ground-breaking, multi-year partnership that builds on the When Work Works initiative that Ms. Galinsky will co-direct. Called Moving Work Forward, this initiative will help businesses become more successful by transforming the way they view and adopt effective and flexible workplaces.

    Lois Backon is senior vice president of Families and Work Institute (FWI). Ms. Backon is currently co-project director for FWI's When Work Works initiative and is responsible for increasing awareness of the need for effective and flexible workplaces throughout the nation and recognizing employers that have programs, policies and a culture of supporting flexible and effective workplaces. She is the co-director of The Supporting Work Project. This project enables business and governmental leadership to establish partnerships within communities to increase the number of employers that help their lower-wage employees access publicly funded work supports.
