News, Information and Resources for the Northeast Region

Greetings from your Northeast MAC Representative!

Over the past month, since SHRM’s announcement of the new HR Competency Certification, the Membership Advisory Council has been focused on communications with volunteer leaders in regards to the new certification. Because the certification quickly became a hot topic, it was agreed that the MAC would temporarily suspend the distribution of the survey data that we collected earlier in the year and provide it to the SHRM board in November. After the announcement was made, we believe the SHRM staff was proactive in providing volunteer leaders with more information about the new certification through online resources, webinars, conference calls and a town meeting with a video link. Additional information was presented during the Volunteer Leaders Briefing and the Regional Council Summit in Orlando including written information that SHRM distributed at the Certification Lounge and SHRM Booth at annual conference.

The MAC team had prescheduled in person meetings in Orlando prior to the annual conference. This included meetings with members of the SHRM leadership team, the SHRM board and the SHRM Foundation board.

When the MAC met with the SHRM board, we provided feedback in response to the new certification. In doing so, we presented detailed information that we gathered from Volunteer Leaders in eight focus areas as well as our recommendations for next steps.

Focus Areas:

  1. Member feedback
  2. Certified Professionals
  3. SHRM Chapters and State Councils
  4. California Strategy
  5. SHRM Communications
  6. Approved Providers
  7. SHRM/HRCI Relationship
  8. SHRM Leadership

  • SHRM needs to have a member-focused campaign which demonstrates the value of the SHRM certification. The current perception is that of a revenue-driven focus.
  • SHRM should develop communication around the Value of SHRM's Competency Model and how it substantially differentiates itself from the HRCI certification.
  • We suggest that SHRM stop using the word "transition" in certification communications and focus on moving the profession forward.
  • SHRM should create a focus group of SHRM Volunteer Leaders to assist SHRM in creating an effective and efficient recertification process.
  • Additionally, SHRM needs to equip the field staff to promote and further engage members about the SHRM certification at the state and chapter level.
  • Finally, we as the MAC, collectively recommend that we be given the opportunity to continue to reach out to members regarding the SHRM certification and begin laying the foundation for engagement. We want to be an instrument for change in advancing the profession and serving the professionals.

The SHRM Board was very attentive to the concerns we address in the 8 focus areas and they responded favorably to our recommendations. Over the next few months, MAC will continue to direct our efforts to the new SHRM-SCP and SHRM-CP certifications.
