In an ongoing commitment to encourage the employment of persons with disabilities, SHRM hosted the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Disability Employment Policy (ODEP) third annual Circle of Champions meeting.  The Circle of Champions is a distinguished group of businesses that have received the Secretary of Labor’s “New Freedom Initiative Award” for innovative efforts to recruit, hire and promote people with disabilities.

The meeting allowed participants to offer policy advice to ODEP and share proven business strategies that increase opportunities for this group of workers and their employers.

Last October, SHRM’s CEO and President Sue Meisinger and Assistant Secretary of Labor W. Roy Gizzard (pictured above) signed an agreement that established an official alliance between the Society and ODEP, the federal agency charged with developing and influencing disability-related employment policy.  Thanks to this Alliance agreement, SHRM and ODEP are collaborating to advance the national dialogue on the recruitment, advancement and retention of workers with disabilities.

During the Circle of Champions meeting, SHRM’s Director of Diversity Programs Shirley Davis described a few joint SHRM – ODEP activities, including:

  • Sponsorship of Mentoring Day, a national career exploration and job-shadowing program that promotes career development for all job-seekers; and
  • Development and distribution of a toolkit to help employers and individuals with disabilities overcome barriers to employment.

Additionally, SHRM’s Chief Knowledge Officer Deb Cohen led a robust discussion about best practices in recruiting and retaining talented individuals with disabilities.
