Since its formal announcement to the SHRM membership at the 2010 SHRM Annual Conference and Exposition, the SHRM Advocacy Team (A-Team) has progressed significantly in the 18 months since inception.  In its first full year in operation, the A-Team’s ever-increasing exposure produced some measurable results in 2011.

Thus far, about 8,000 activists have joined the A-Team to stay abreast of developments within the A-Team and serve as possible HR Advocate volunteers.  In 2011, 50 in-person A-Team information and training sessions were held throughout the country.  Since the program’s launch in 2010, 2,400 SHRM members have participated in A-Team training sessions.  From those participants, 425 members have volunteered to serve as Advocacy Captains or HR Advocates.  During the early stages of 2011, just over 60 Advocacy Captains from the 2010 target states were named; an additional 110 Captains from 2010 and 2011 states should be in place by January 2012.

The momentum building from a heightened awareness of SHRM’s member advocacy initiative goes beyond A-Team sessions, impacting SHRM’s conferences.  During the 2011 Employment Law and Legislative Conference in March and 2011 Leadership Conference in November, a record number of SHRM members ‘hiked to the Hill’ on behalf of SHRM.  In March, 227 conference attendees went to Capitol Hill to meet with their member of Congress – an increase of 23% over 2010.  In November, 310 Leadership Conference attendees did the same, 77% more than last year.

The states targeted for the 2012 A-Team rollout are: Colorado; Connecticut; Georgia; Idaho; Indiana; Iowa; Maryland; Oklahoma; Tennessee; and, Wyoming.  Learn more about the initiative by viewing the A-Team promotional video HERE or on the SHRM website by visiting HERE
