Throughout 2011, SHRM and the Families and Work Institute’s (FWI) When Work Works initiative, in conjunction with community partners across the country, has been quite active.  In short, the partnership has:

When Work Works outreach efforts for 2011 wrapped up last week at the Portland Human Resource Management Association (PHRMA). 2011 efforts focused on introducing the program to SHRM affiliates and educating employers on workplace flexibility in six target states (Maryland, California, Oregon, Virginia, Texas and Illinois.)
In 2012, SHRM and FWI will be rolling out the When Work Works initiative to even more states with the help of a nearly $1 million grant from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. Click HERE to read more about the Sloan Foundation grant. 2012 When Work Works target states include California, Nevada, Idaho, Alaska, Oklahoma, Arizona, Missouri, Michigan, Minnesota, North Dakota, New York, Pennsylvania, Maine, Florida, West Virginia and New Hampshire.
Working with SHRM State Councils and Chapters in these states, SHRM and FWI will:

  • Provide educational programming on the business benefits of flexibility in target states.
  • Encourage affiliates to incorporate the When Work Works program in their SHRM Affiliate Program for Excellence as a strategic initiative for diversity and inclusion, workforce readiness, or a self-defined other area of action.
  • Raise awareness of the Sloan awards and the benefits of applying for this prestigious award.
  • Showcase Sloan award-winning organizations and their effective practices.
