On Thursday, October 15, the U.S. House of Representatives approved a FY 2010 spending bill for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) that included funding for E-Verify through September 2012.

Without this funding, E-Verify – the Federal government’s employment verification program – was scheduled to expire on October 31, 2009.

The $44.1 billion spending bill for DHS (H.R. 2892) passed the House of Representatives by a vote of 307 – 114.  The Senate is expected to approve the measure during the week of October 19 - 23 and send it to the President for his signature.

 SHRM continues to advocate for the adoption of H.R. 2028, the “New Employee Verification Act” (NEVA), introduced by Representatives Sam Johnson (R-TX) and Gabrielle Giffords (D-AZ).  The legislation, supported by the SHRM-ledHR Initiative for a Legal Workforce,” would replace E-Verify with a paperless and more reliable 21st Century verification system.
