Workplace Flexibility

On October 12, SHRM partnered with the Congressional Hispanic Leadership Institute to educate Capitol Hill staff and industry professionals on the importance of workplace flexibility.

At the briefing, Sarah Manzano-Diaz, director of the Department of Labor’s Women’s Bureau, stressed the importance of redefining where, when and how work occurs as part of an overall business strategy.

Also speaking at the program were Mike Aitken, SHRM V.P. of Government Relations; Lois Backon, senior vice president, Families and Work Institute; and Lisa Horn, senior Government Relations advisor, SHRM (shown in picture, from right to left). They were followed by Marcy Karin, director of the Work-Life Policy Unit within the Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law at Arizona State University; and Dr. Shelley M. MacDermid Wadsworth, from Purdue University’s Department of Human Development and Family Studies.

Horn said workplace flexibility is “not just an employee benefit or component of compensation—it’s a key business imperative that ultimately affects a company’s bottom line.” She described best practices from companies that won the Alfred P. Sloan Awards for Business Excellence in Workplace Flexibility, published annually in the Guide to Bold New Ideas for Making Work Work.

The briefing coincided with “National Work and Family Month” and highlighted work that the SHRM and Families and Work Institute partnership is initiating to help employers succeed by embracing workplace flexibility.
