Presidential Conventions

SHRM Represents HR Professionals at the RNC and DNC
SHRM and ACIP (American Council on International Personnel) staff represented the HR profession at the Republican National Convention, held August 26-30 in Tampa, Fla., and the Democratic National Convention, held Sept. 2-6 in Charlotte, N.C. Both events brought many opportunities to showcase HR's unique perspective on key workplace issues. [ More ]

Capitol Hill Update

SHRM Witness Testifies on Disability Management Practices
On Friday, Sept.14, SHRM member Nadine Vogel appeared before the U.S. House Social Security Subcommittee at a hearing on the solvency of the Social Security Administration's (SSA) Disability Insurance (DI) program. The hearing was called in part because the 2012 Annual Report of the SSA Board of Trustees found that DI revenues will cover only 79 percent of benefits beginning in 2016. [ More ]

SHRM Members Travel to Capitol Hill
Earlier this month, over 40 HR professionals from Georgia, Maryland, Virginia and the District of Columbia traveled to Capitol Hill to conduct a series of meetings with their elected officials in support of extending the tax preference of employer-provided educational assistance under Section 127 of the tax code.  Their discussions, conducted at a time when the nation and Congress must decide how to address the approaching 'fiscal cliff' of the $16+ trillion federal debt and a series of tax cuts set to expire at the close of 2012, couldn't have been more timely. [ More ]

SHRM and ACIP Issue Joint Statement in Support of STEM Bills
On Sept.18, SHRM and the American Council on International Personnel (ACIP) released a strong statement in support of a series of bills pending before Congress that would make employment-based green cards more easily available to foreign-born, advanced STEM graduates from U.S. universities – a reform that would help U.S. employers grow our 21st century workforce by enabling access to the talent they need and must retain. Legal Developments

SHRM Files Supreme Court Amicus Briefs in Two Workplace Cases
Earlier this month, SHRM signed on to two amicus briefs filed with the Supreme Court on cases involving an employer health plan's ability to seek reimbursement in the case of personal injury settlements, and an employer's ability to settle Fair Labor Standards Act cases. [ More ]
