The Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute (CHCI) held its 2011 Public Policy Conference earlier this week and SHRM was proud to be involved in the program. Board Chair Jose A. Berrios (pictured center below) was a featured panelist in the opening plenary session, “Keeping the Promise: U.S. Economy and the Changing Demographics.”  To view a video recording of the plenary session, click HERE.
Joining him were Secretary Shaun Donovan, U.S. Dept. of Housing and Urban Development; Rep. Charles A. Gonzalez, chairman of CHCI; Ron Brownstein of the National Journal; and Nina Vaca-Humrichouse, chairman & CEO, Pinnacle Technical Resources. Ray Suarez of PBS NewsHour moderated.

Topics discussed included the correlation between education and financial security, the importance of professional development and diversity in a workforce, and the lack of critical-skills training in high school and college. “As many as three million jobs are currently unfilled because organizations can’t find candidates with the necessary skills to fill them,” Berrios said.
Berrios and Hank Jackson, SHRM president and CEO, also joined CHCI at its awards gala honoring Secretary of Interior Ken Salazar and Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis. Leading the long list of dignitaries attending were President Obama and the First Lady. President Obama took the opportunity to advocate his huge jobs bill, saying, “The fight that we are having right now, the fight to put people back to work, could not be more important for the Latino community and the people in this room.”

SHRM has partnered with CHCI since 2009 and is continually working to support its objectives in a range of areas.
