Health Care Developments

Recently, the U.S. Departments of Labor, Health and Human Services, and the IRS have invited public comment on several implementation rules for the health care reform law.  SHRM has filed comments on three.

For instance, we’re concerned about a proposal that could jeopardize the “grandfathered” status of some health plans.  We suggested revisions that would allow employers to make some changes and improvements to their plans without then having to re-design them entirely to conform to the new law.

More information about SHRM’s comments on all three rules is available on the SHRM Web site, or by clicking HERE.  For SHRM’s full resources on health care reform, go to

Upcoming Webcast Opportunity:

Health Care Reform and This Year’s Annual Enrollment

Wednesday, September 22, 2010

2:00 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. (ET)
Recertification Hours: 1.5

In the months since the the passage of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, the immediate impacts for employers are becoming clear. Recently enacted or announced regulations provide details for employers offering self-insured plans; on plan grandfathering; providing facilities for nursing mothers; and coverage of plan participants' adult children. In other cases, although formal regulations have not been promulgated, policymakers have signaled the direction the rules will take.

This webcast will clearly spell out the regulations that are now in place and their impact for your organization. It will also discuss the trends seen in recent regulations as well as when employers can expect to see additional regulations to clarify outstanding issues.

Just as importantly, the program will provide you with guidelines for communicating these new rules to both leaders and rank-and-file employees in your organization, just in time for open-enrollment in 2010.

Workplace Application: This 90-minute webcast, with Q&A, is designed to help human resource professionals understand and communicate formally enacted provisions of health care reform and plan for good-faith compliance with the new law.

Presenters: Anne E. Crumlish, FSA, MAAA, senior consultant and actuary in the Health Management Practice of Hewitt Associates and Joann Hall Swenson, principal and national leader in health engagement in the Communications Practice of Hewitt Associates.
