Cornelia Gamlem

SHRM member Cornelia Gamlem testified on behalf of the Society on May 23 at the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission's (EEOC) public hearing on "Achieving Work/Family Balance: Employer Best Practices for Workers with Caregiving Responsibilities."

In her statement, Gamlem highlighted examples of how employers are helping to promote an improved work-life balance for employees who serve as caregivers. She also explained the ways in which SHRM assists its members in establishing work-life policies. Ms. Gamlem discussed initiatives that HR professionals use to raise awareness of workplace flexibility issues and create respectful workplace practices.

During the hearing, the Commission announced new enforcement guidance on the unlawful treatment of workers with caregiving responsibilities. The guidance addresses unlawful stereotyping, as well as sex-based discriminatory treatment of caregivers (particularly male caregivers), pregnant employees and women of color, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act. The guidance is effective immediately.
