On May 17, nearly 65 professionals brought the voice of HR to life in the California State Capitol. With more than 30 workplace-related measures pending in the California Senate and General Assembly, there wasn’t a shortage of topics to address in their visits with legislators and their staffs during CalSHRM’s 2012 Legislative Conference.

This contingent of HR advocates was the largest ever organized to lobby in a SHRM-supported state capitol visit. During their meetings, they shared HR’s perspective on two pending bills before the California General Assembly — California’s Family Rights Act Expansion (AB 2309) and Discrimination against the Unemployed (AB 1450).

The group included many first-timers. One meeting alone included five HR professionals who had never before visited with a legislator. They were recruited by Trisha Zulic-CM, SPHR, of San Diego, a CalSHRM district director and A-Team advocacy captain for the 52nd Congressional District. Chery Cerise, MBA, PHR-CA, pictured at right with fellow members from the Santa Barbara Human Resouces Association chapter noted, "I’m pleased to tell you I thoroughly enjoyed the day. I didn’t know how much I’d like being an employment law advocate until after I’d done exactly that. I intend to volunteer on  SHRM’S California Advocacy Team to continue my new found passion." 

Following the group’s meetings in the capitol, CalSHRM Government Affairs Director Michael Kalt said, “Every participant enjoyed the experience and said they looked forward to doing it again next year.”
