Over 15 months ago, SHRM signed a Statement of Support with the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR), pledging to focus special attention on providing resources and training to HR on successful recruitment and retention of service-connected employees.   

Since that time, SHRM has built collaborations with ESGR, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, and the U.S. Department of Labor’s Veterans’ Employment & Training Service (VETS) on initiatives to increase employment opportunities for returning veterans and protecting jobs for those called to active duty. Just last month, the White House invited SHRM Interim President and CEO Hank Jackson (pictured above at far right) to participate on behalf of the Society in the White House briefing announcing “Joining Forces”—a presidential initiative designed to focus on the needs of military families.  This effort is being led by first lady Michelle Obama and Dr. Jill Biden.

At this time, more than 275 SHRM Chapters and 31 State Councils have signed their own ESGR Statements of Support helping make SHRM a key voice in the effort to increase employment opportunities for returning veterans and protecting jobs for those called to active duty. 

SHRM is currently collaborating on the creation and distribution of a comprehensive toolkit and accompanying webcast designed specifically for HR practitioners. These educational materials will include resources and tips on not only effective practices for recruiting and retaining veterans, but also on creating a high-performing work environment for service-connected employees, focusing on the maximizing of workplace flexibility policies to support the demands of military families.
 
Special Session at the 2011 SHRM Annual Conference and Exposition

As part of its upcoming 2011 Annual Conference and Exposition in Las Vegas, SHRM is conducting a special preconference program titled “Engaging Military Veterans” on Sunday, June 26, from 8:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. This program will cover such topics as how to create a military inclusiveness strategy, conducting interviews of veterans, how to handle on-the-job accommodations, and ways of retaining the talent you’ve cultivated. The program is free for annual conference attendees, but preregistration is required. This program has been approved for HR Certification Institute credit, including strategic credit.
