On May 4th, SHRM’s Senior Government Relations Advisor, Lisa Horn (pictured 2nd from the right below with three of the awardees), joined Richmond SHRM, the Greater Richmond Chamber and the Richmond Times-Dispatch to present the first 2011 Sloan Awards for Business Excellence in Workplace Flexibility during the 2011 Employer All Star Awards breakfast

A total of six Sloan awards were presented by Horn to BDO USA, LLP, Bon Secours Richmond Health System, Capital One, Heritage Wealth Advisors, Vaco Richmond, LLC, and VCU Health System. View the event program HERE to learn why each organization was selected as a Sloan award recipient. 

As one of the original community partners to the When Work Works initiative, Richmond SHRM’s early adoption of the program exemplifies the “ahead-of-the curve” efforts of employers in the Richmond area.  As part of the Society’s new partnership with the Families and Work Institute, SHRM is now a proud co-sponsor of When Work Works and will help implement this initiative within its network of affiliates to advance effective and flexible workplaces.

Earlier this week, SHRM’s Lisa Horn was a lead contributor in a NPR story on “Workplace Flexibility in the U.S. Could Be Key to International Competition.”  In the interview, Horn noted SHRM research highlighting increased productivity within organizations with effective and flexible workplaces, concluding that flexibility is the “next great business imperative.”  You can listen to the interview by clicking HERE.

Talking about the 2011 Sloan Awards, the deadline for self nominations is quickly approaching.  The award is designed to recognize employers of choice that are successfully creating effective and flexible workplaces to help their businesses and employees thrive. Employers of all sizes are invited to apply for a chance to win the coveted award and for an opportunity to see how their practices measure up. All applicants will receive a custom benchmarking report on workplace effectiveness and flexibility that compares their programs and policies to other leading employers. The deadline is May 27, 2011.
