Employment Law & Legislative Conference

Congressional approval of comprehensive health care reform wasn’t the only important event in Washington last week.

SHRM’s 2010 Employment Law & Legislative Conference, which attracted more than 600 HR professionals, featured a balance of Republican, Democratic, and non-partisan experts. Speakers provided a variety of ideas and a range of perspectives on health care reform, workplace flexibility, the upcoming 2010 elections, and other policy and political issues. 

 

Among the presenters were Huffington Post founder Arianna Huffington, Claire Shipman from ABC’s Good Morning America, Katty Kay from the BBC, Amy Holmes and Jamal Simmons from CNN, former Obama advisor Anita Dunn, and members of Congress.

 

During the conference, SHRM released its updated public policy handbook, which summarizes the Society’s positions on a range of HR public policy issues pending in Washington and in the states.  You can download a copy of the handbook by clicking HERE.

  •  Launch of “We Know Next” Visibility Campaign

The conference provided an appropriate backdrop for the launch of SHRM’s new external visibility campaign — We Know Next.  By launching this new public awareness campaign targeted to policymakers, business leaders, the media and people who help drive public opinion, SHRM is demonstrating how HR helps companies, big and small, stay focused on what’s coming next in the workplace.  We believe this effort will promote a better understanding of our profession among non-HR audiences, and elevate your voice in Washington, in your state and in your organization.  Log onto www.WeKnowNext.com to see who is saying great things about HR!

 

  • SHRM Supports the Guard and Reserve

As SHRM members entered the ballroom on the final day of the Legislative Conference, they were met by uniformed representatives of every branch of the U.S. military.  Following the Color Guard’s display of the U.S. and military flags, SHRM president and CEO Lon O’Neil, SHRM Chairman of the Board Robb Van Cleave, and Assistant Secretary of Defense for Reserve Affairs Dennis McCarthy took the stage to sign a statement of support between SHRM and the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR).

By signing the statement, Lon reaffirmed SHRM’s commitment to fully recognize and enforce the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act (USERRA), to ensure managers and supervisors have the tools they need to effectively manage employees serving in the Guard and Reserve, and to continually recognize and support our country’s service members and families in peace, crisis, and war.

Lon O’Neil also issued a challenge to all SHRM State Council and Chapter members to sign statements of support for the Guard and Reserve as part of an ongoing effort to encourage SHRM members to hire military veterans in communities across America.  To learn more about how to schedule a ceremony and sign a statement of support with ESGR, visit www.ESGR.org.
