Technical Advisory Group Formed to Create HR Standards and Act as Standards Advocate 

ISO approves separate technical committee to develop HR standards 

Alexandria, Va. - The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) announces the formation of a U.S. Technical Advisory Group to act as a forum to assess and advocate human resource management standards for a new International Organization for Standardization Technical Committee for Human Resource Management.

SHRM will act as the administrator of the group. The advising group will bring together practitioners, consultants, academics and other interested parties to develop consensus on human resource management practices and related workforce issues that affect hiring and managing employees globally.

The mission also includes: educating policymakers on such workforce issues; addressing specific employment matters to minimize related policy disputes; and serving as a sounding board for new ideas for HR standards at the ISO Technical Committee for HR Management.

“The human resource management profession has matured to the point where it must create and implement standards of organizational performance that meet the talent acquisition and deployment need of domestics and international firms,” said Lee Webster, SHRM’s director of HR standards.

Webster continued, “Mired in a variety of practices, polices, customs, and metrics that often conflict, business leaders are demanding that the HR profession offer a dependable workflow of management solutions that they can use to acquire talent and assess the effectiveness of their HR operations.”

Over the coming weeks, the group will name a chairperson and develop an operational structure and functions, including:

  • Promoting outreach within the management community;
  • Identifying effective practices by HR departments and other entities;
  • Interpreting regional HR practices;
  • Providing guidance to the HR industry and to the public; 
  • Issuing advisory opinions on the appropriate HR-related technical issues; and
  • Exploring and applying solutions that are economical, technically feasible, and ethical.

Members of the group will come from a diverse background of HR practitioners and other technical experts from academia, non-profits and the government. Participating companies represent a range of industries.

The International Organization for Standardization also recently approved the creation of a new technical committee to develop human resource standards. The United States will hold the secretariat of the new committee, which will focus its efforts on the development of standards in talent acquisition and management.

Committee participants will include HR professionals, academics, consultants, attorneys, government agencies, collective bargaining units, line managers and employees. The committee will meet for the first time later this year.

The committee's work will address issues related to workforce management across a variety of industries, including diversity and inclusion, measures and metrics, staffing, performance management, training and development, change management, compensation and benefits, employee relations, organizational development and discipline.
