SHRM ‘Healthy, Prosperous,’ CEO Tells Volunteer Leaders

Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) CEO and president Henry G. “Hank” Jackson, CPA, shared encouraging news of the SHRM State of the Society as the 2012 Leadership Conference concluded Nov. 17, 2012, in Washington, D.C.

“Your professional society is healthy and prosperous, it is capable and responsive, and it is poised to thrive for years to come,” Jackson said during prepared remarks in which he credited the support and work of SHRM’s volunteer leaders and members, and SHRM staff.

He reminded the volunteer chapter and council leaders attending the conference that they “are the frontline of SHRM” and have much to do with the organization exceeding its 2012 goal of attaining 265,000 members. Jackson said SHRM membership is expected to reach nearly 267,000 by year’s end, according to a transcript of his remarks.

Jackson also cited SHRM’s accomplishments during 2012 in meeting its four strategic priorities—to serve the core membership, to be a global organization, to be financially sustainable and to be a thought leader:

  • More than 13,500 people from nearly 75 countries attended the 2012 Annual Conference in Atlanta.
  • SHRM unveiled its new Competency Model, made up of nine critical competencies, at the Annual Conference.  The Competency Self-Assessment is slated to launch in January 2013.  To date, 400 people have pre-registered for this assessment and more than 600 people have inquired about its availability and features.
  • More than 1,200 students have enrolled in SHRM’s Assurance of Learning Assessment exam, now in its second year. In January 2013, SHRM will make available a newly designed Employer’s Guide on the Assurance of Learning Assessment.
  • SHRM released preparation materials in November 2012 for the HR Certification Institute’s new Human Resource Business Professional (HRBP) and Human Resource Management Professional (HRMP) certificationsthat will be offered to HR professionals outside the United States.
  • SHRM has begun working with chapters to help them meet new affiliation standards, which require that by 2017 chapters must have a minimum of 25 SHRM members and 51 percent of the chapter’s total members must be SHRM members.
  • SHRM is piloting a local skills survey to help its members identify the challenges in their geographic areas to help focus their employers’ training programs.
  • SHRM’s first major conference in Goa, India—“First, People”— attracted more than 400 HR professionals.
  • SHRM’s CHRO initiative—aimed at maximizing opportunities for HR executives to come together, share ideas and be involved with setting the profession’s agenda—now includes networks in Atlanta; Chicago; Palm Springs, Calif.; San Diego; and Mumbai, India.
  • SHRM has forged a partnership with the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve and a strategic affiliation with the American Council on International Personnel.

As for progress SHRM is making toward other initiatives, Jackson noted that:

  • He projects 8 percent year-over-year revenue growth and a 1.5 percent operating margin by the end of 2012.
  • Work continues with the American National Standards Institute and the International Organization for Standardization on 11 ANSI HR standards.
  • SHRM continues its promotion of flexible workplaces.
