Henry Hart's responsibilities as SHRM General Counsel include: leading corporate strategic and tactical legal initiatives; providing senior management with advice on company strategies and their implementation; managing the legal function and overseeing the work of outside counsel; providing continuing counsel and guidance on legal matters and on legal implications of major activities; negotiating critical contracts; serving as key lawyer/legal advisor on all major business transactions; judging the merits of major court cases filed against or on behalf of SHRM; and ensuring that SHRM conducts its business in compliance with all applicable laws and regulations.

Before joining SHRM in March 2006, Henry was in private practice as a partner in the Washington, D.C., office of Reed Smith, LLP. The major portion of his private practice focused on the representation of national trade associations (including SHRM) in the areas of antitrust, taxation, corporate governance, intellectual property licensing and contract negotiations, use of tax-exempt subsidiaries, and general non-stock corporate matters.

Henry has given numerous lectures for the American Society of Association Executives and for the Virginia Bar Association Continuing Legal Education Foundation on trade association and tax-exempt organization legal issues.

He was the 2002-2003 chair of the American Society of Association Executives Legal Section Council, and is president of the Stabler Leadbeater Apothecary Museum in Alexandria, Va. He is admitted to the Bars of the Commonwealth of Virginia, the District of Columbia and the State of Maryland. A cum laude graduate of Amherst College, Henry received his J.D. from Georgetown University. He served as a Law Clerk to the Honorable Donald S. Smith, D.C. Superior Court.
