Key Findings from SHRM Foundation-Funded Studies
The SHRM Foundation supports researchers who bring us greater understanding of the complexities of HR. During the past three years, the Foundation has funded more than $1.6 million in research grants for studies that advance the knowledge base of the profession.
The SHRM Foundation is also committed to creating materials that explain how practitioners can capitalize on the new knowledge that research provides.
The HR Research Results brochure presents the results of recent SHRM Foundation-funded projects in an actionable way, so HR professionals can apply this knowledge in their organizations. The topic areas are: Is There a Business Case for Work-Family Programs?; Promoting Effective Engagement and Retention of the Aging American Workforce; Keeping the Most Experienced Employees by Deferring Retirement and Building Team Resilience: Lessons Learned from College Sports Coaches. Educational DVDs
The SHRM Foundation has created a series of educational DVDs that feature real-world case studies of successful companies that align HR strategy with corporate business objectives. The DVDs are distributed free of charge to SHRM chapters, educators and businesses. The SHRM Foundation also offers a discussion guide and powerpoint presentation for use in SHRM chapter programming, staff trainings, or executive education sessions. The HR Certification Institute has approved many of the DVDs for one hour of credit, when used with the companion materials as part of a 1-hour educational session (see the Foundation website for details).
The Foundation’s newest DVD, Doing Well by Doing Good: Global Sustainability at Aditya Birla Group describes the Aditya Birla Group’s ongoing investment in social and economic development in the communities in which they operate.
Other DVDs include Once the Deal is Done: Making Mergers Work, an inside look at the successful merger of Bupa Australia, now the nation's largest privately managed health care health insurance group.World Economic Forum: Creating Global Leaders, Seeing Forward, which focuses on succession planning at 3M; Trust Travels: The Starbucks Story; Ethics: The Fabric of Business (profiling Lockheed Martin); Fueling the Talent Engine: Finding and Keeping High Performers (profiling Yahoo!); and HR In Alignment: The Link to Business Results (profiling Sysco Food Services Company). The DVDs are available for viewing online.

Effective Practice Guidelines

Scholarships for HR Professionals
Are you a SHRM member pursuing a college degree (HR, business, psychology, etc.) or professional certification? The SHRM Foundation will award $100,000 in scholarships to SHRM professional members in 2012.
The scholarships are allocated equally among the five SHRM geographic regions, which means you are competing only with applicants in your own part of the country. Recipients are selected primarily on merit, and a significant portion of the selection criteria includes HR involvement and future career plans, as well as volunteer activities and leadership experience.
Academic scholarships are available to those working toward a graduate or undergraduate college degree in HR or a related field. Certification scholarships are available to those working toward certification (SPHR, GPHR, PHR, or California) and to affiliated SHRM chapters and state councils that are organizing local certification preparation programs.

SHRM Foundation News: The Executive Briefing Series
To make it easier for HR professionals to share important evidence-based management practices with their CEOs and line managers, the SHRM Foundation has introduced its new Executive Briefing series.
The executive briefings are based on solid research. They cover similar content to the popular Effective Practice Guidelines, however they are just 3-5 pages in length, making them ideal to share with colleagues at the office. The briefings highlight the most important, bottom-line implications on each HR topic. The following briefings are now available for free download:

Student Scholarships
The SHRM Foundation supports the next generation of HR leaders through a variety of awards programs for students and educators.
Each year, the SHRM Foundation awards $50,000 in scholarships to SHRM student members. In addition to education scholarships, this year the Foundation will offer scholarships of $200 each for students taking the new Assurance of Learning Assessment.
The SHRM Foundation recognizes the important work of SHRM student chapter advisors by supporting the annual Advisor of the Year Award.
In addition, the SHRM Foundation partners with the HR Division of the Academy of Management to present four $5,000 awards to promising doctoral dissertation students.

Generating Research-Based Knowledge
The SHRM Foundation is the leading funder of HR research grants--providing funding for high-impact, original HR research that advances the knowledge base of the profession. In the past 12 years, the SHRM Foundation has funded more than $2.8 million in research grants for over 105 research projects. Topics for research include:
- Making virtual teams more effective.
- Increasing the success rate of new executives.
- Employee engagement in multinational corporations.
- Retention of an older workforce.
- Impact of HR practices on organizational social performance.
Much of your every day work is influenced by research, even if you have never read a research paper. Thought Leaders Retreat
Each fall, the SHRM Foundation Thought Leaders Retreat brings together a select group of leading-edge thinkers and practitioners in the HR field. It started in 1999 as a way for SHRM Foundation board members to interact with outside experts and to generate new research ideas. From that beginning, the event grew each year to include members of the other SHRM boards and special guests.
Today, the invitation-only Thought Leaders Retreat targets a senior executive audience and focuses on strategic issues such as Rebuilding the Talent Value Proposition for What's Next (2010), Positioning Your Organization for Recovery (2009) and Workforce 2012: Attracting and Retaining Top Talent (2008). Participants explore issues shaping the future of the profession and their implications for research and practice.
