How to Apply for a SHRM Foundation Research Grant

2014 Research Focus: The Evolution of Work and the Worker  

The SHRM Foundation seeks to fund high-impact research on all aspects of human resource management with a focus on addressing current challenges or understanding emerging trends. Any topic may be funded however the research must be aimed at an academic audience while also having direct, actionable implications for HR practice. It is crucial that there is continuity between the research questions proposed and the methods used.  The research should also be able to reasonably generalize across people and settings.  Investigators should include a statement in the proposal regarding the individuals, groups, industry sectors or countries for which their findings are expected to generalize, given the sample and study design.

If your research meets these criteria, we encourage you to submit a grant proposal. The Foundation has a limited amount of funding available in each review cycle, so the funding process is competitive. To increase the likelihood that your project will be funded, please review the information below and prepare your proposal in accordance with the guidelines provided. In addition, we encourage you to submit a formal letter of inquiry to find out whether or not your proposal will be a good fit with SHRM Foundation funding criteria.

Tips for success: the grant proposal is your opportunity to convince reviewers that your research is important and relevant, and the study is likely to succeed. Explain the expected ease of applicability and generalizability (or limits to generalizability) of the results. Where possible, provide specific examples of how an HR practitioner may be able to use the findings.  You are also encouraged to test your theories against prevailing HR practice (rather than no practice) as this is more likely to be useful for HR practitioners.  

Please note: overhead up to 15% of direct costs may be requested when required by the PI's institution. However the maximum overall grant budget must not exceed $200,000 USD.
