Melvin L. Asbury, SPHR
Mel Asbury has more than 30 years of HR experience and currently serves as President of Asbury Consulting LLC and Senior Vice President of the HR Group Inc., a consulting and training firm that assists small and medium sized companies with human resources issues. He also serves as an adjunct faculty member at the Center for Creative Leadership and Lore International Institute. Prior to his current position, Asbury was Head of Human Resources at Talecris Biotherapeutics, a biotech company, and Spectrasite Communications, a telecommunications firm. He also has worked with Exxon Mobil and GlaxoSmithKline.
His focus as a consultant includes leadership development, HR professional development, diversity initiatives, conflict management, outdoor experiential team building, Total Quality Management, business coaching and career development of minority and women managers. His experience includes mergers and acquisitions, startups, organizational redesign projects, "employer of choice" initiatives and other innovative HR programs.
Asbury was appointed to the Board in 2006 and currently serves as a director on the 2009 SHRM Board of Directors. Additionally, in 2003, Asbury was named the SHRM North Carolina "Human Resource Professional of the Year." He is a past director of the North Carolina State Council and has served in leadership roles at the SHRM chapter level in Raleigh, Winston-Salem, and Research Triangle. He is a past member of SHRM's Human Capital Measurement/HR Metrics Special Expertise Panel and the Society�s Panel Selection Committee.
Asbury obtained his business coaching certifications through UNC and the Center for Creative Leadership, an undergraduate degree in business from North Carolina Central University and a master's degree in industrial relations from Purdue University.
