HRCI Reorganizes

Due to HRCI’s tremendous growth over the past decade, the Institute has reorganized to better manage its current and future endeavors. As part of this reorganization, a new operations director position has been created to reduce the executive director’s range of responsibility.

Cornelia Springer, CAE, has been named the new operations director. Cornelia joined the HRCI staff in 1990 and has served as its director for the past nine years. In her new position, she will continue to direct the development and implementation of staff and vendor services in the areas of certification, testing, recertification and approved-provider programs.

Mary E. Power, CAE, has been named the new executive director. She will focus on strategic planning, international development opportunities, partnering with SHRM and external partners, and elevating HRCI’s public image. Most recently, Mary was the president and CEO of the Convention Industry Council, where she championed the development and implementation of voluntary standards, as well as the growth and global expansion of a voluntary certification program. She has a proven record in international development, strategic planning, marketing and communication.

HRCI at a State Conference Near You

As you all know, conference season is in full swing. As part of our enhanced grassroots program, HRCI is scheduled to or has already participated in nine state and regional conferences this season, including the Indiana, Colorado, and Ohio state conferences; the Puerto Rico Conference; NHRMA, HR Southeast, HR Southwest and PIHRA; and the Kentucky and Arizona State Leadership conferences. Participating in these conferences allows HRCI staff the opportunity to answer questions about certification and recertification and gives us a better understanding of the needs of HR professionals out in the field. Please contact Lee Ann Evans at levans@hrci.org if you are interested in HRCI participating in your 2008 conference.

May/June Testing Window

HRCI had a great turnout for the May/June testing window. Of the 6,599 people who sat for the PHR, 4,043 passed the exam (61%). Of the 3,700 people who sat for the SPHR, 2,140 passed (58%). Of the 205 who sat for the GPHR, 109 passed (53%). To view, by state, those who were newly certified, please click here. To date, we have nearly 90,000 certified HR professionals. This includes 99 professionals certified with our newest credential, the PHR-CA/SPHR-CA (California state certification).

We’re anticipating an even larger turnout for the December/January testing window, for which we’re accepting applications until Nov. 16, 2007. This will be the first testing window in which the new California certification will be offered via computer. Please encourage your colleagues to apply for the exams at www.hrci.org.

Value of Certification Study

HRCI has embarked on an important and multi-faceted study to research the perceived and actual value of HR certification. We have enlisted the help of the Hay Group to conduct this research, which includes focus groups, one-on-one interviews, surveys and a compensation study. Both HR and non-HR professionals will be tapped to provide their views on the importance of HR certification both to the individuals who obtain certifications as well as to the organizations in which they work. Please encourage your constituents to participate in the study.

GPHR Practice Analysis Study

HRCI is currently engaged in a study to update the existing GPHR Body of Knowledge to reflect any changes that have taken place in the past five years to the global HR practice. A practitioner survey outlining the updated exam content outline is currently being distributed to more than 2,000 global HR professionals. The results of the survey will be presented for approval to the HRCI Board of Directors in November. Once the outline is approved, subject-matter experts will work throughout 2008 to remap and develop exam questions that reflect the updated body of knowledge. The first exams based on these revisions will be offered in the spring of 2009.
