On November 20, during SHRM’s Leadership Conference, SHRM President & CEO Lon O’Neil and Kathy Martinez, Assistant Secretary for the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Disability Employment Policy (ODEP), formally extended an alliance agreement for two years to work together to improve opportunities for people with disabilities.
SHRM CEO Lon O’Neil and Assistant Secretary Martinez Sign the SHRM-ODEP Agreement
As HR professionals know, individuals with disabilities are severely underrepresented in the job market – with just 21.7 percent employed compared with 70.5 percent of nondisabled individuals.
In October, Lon O'Neil met with Assistant Secretary Martinez and Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis to discuss best practices and strategies for creating workplaces that are supportive and inclusive of people with disabilities. The SHRM-ODEP agreement will build on this discussion and address the interests and concerns of employers, persons with disabilities and HR professionals.
