Representative of a growing trend in SHRM’s Member Advocacy activities, members of the HR Tampa Chapter traveled to Washington for a day of Capitol Hill meetings last week.
Following a briefing at SHRM headquarters on the legislative issues they would be discussing during their meetings, representatives of HR Tampa visited with the staff of Representatives Kathy Castor (D) and Gus Bilirakis (R), and of Senators Bill Nelson (D) and George LeMieux (R).
The Tampa-area SHRM members discussed various issues including health care reform and the “Healthy Families Act,” a bill that would require most U.S. employers to provide up to 56 hours of paid leave each year.

2009 has been a banner year for Member Advocacy activities at SHRM. In addition to setting a new record for the number of letters written to federal and state legislators through the HR Voice program, HR professionals have also set a new record for Days Inside the Beltway (DITB) visits. This year, SHRM has hosted 8 DITB events and is scheduled to host two additional visits before year’s end.
