A change is coming in the way the government issues Social Security numbers. Starting in June 2011, numbers will be issued randomly, not linked to the address of the applicant. The action is designed to reduce identity theft and increase available numbers.
Some revisions to workplace computer systems may be necessary. The Social Security Administration is hosting a conference call on Sept. 22, at 1:00 p.m. EST, to answer questions about the new process. If you’re interested, e-mail SSA at Irene.C.Saccoccio@ssa.gov so they can anticipate call volume. At the time of the conference, call 1-866-539-1119. The pass code, or “room number,” is *8056191* and you must use both asterisks.
