Obama Administration Announces Delay of PPACA 'Employer Mandate' Provision Until 2015

HR professionals across the country are celebrating today, not just in anticipation for Independence Day, but because of the U.S. Treasury Department’s announcement of a one year delay in implementing the employer mandate in the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.  While formal guidance is expected in the next week, the agency signaled that employer shared responsibility payments and information reporting requirements will not apply until 2015.

In a White House blog post, Senior Advisor to the President Valerie Jarrett (above) suggested that this decision came in response to business concerns about implementing the new law noting, “We are listening.” SHRM members have consistently reported challenges in implementing the new law citing its complexity and cost concerns, so this transition period is welcome news to SHRM and its members.
